Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“End outsourcing in our NHS”

Sir Keir Starmer, Labour Leadership Candidate, Leadership Campaign Pledge #5

In Sir Keir Starmer’s 2020 Labour leadership manifesto he pledged to “End outsourcing in our NHS”

In January 2022 Shadow Health Secretary said he would not “shirk” from using the private sector “to bring down NHS waiting lists.”

“I will be pretty furious at the costs involved,” he said, “because it shouldn’t be the case that because Tory governments run down the NHS, we have to spend more taxpayers’ money than would be necessary in the private sector because we haven’t sorted out the public sector.”

Covid has, of course, intensified the crisis in the NHS since the pledges were made. But this is not a justification either Streeting or Starmer have used. And the tone of his and Starmer’s comments do not suggest they see outsourcing as a temporary, emergency measure.

Streeting said the use of the private sector had proved “effective” and “popular with patients” in the past.

This is undoubtedly a broken pledge and can’t be justified by the argument it will save money.

We emailed Sir Keir Starmer’s office and Labour offering them the chance to respond. We received no response.
