Facts
During an interview with Adrian Masters for ITV Wales, the Prime Minister declared that “a blanket 20mph speed limit” is “absolutely not right”.
The Senedd – the Welsh Parliament – approved proposals to introduce 20mph roads in July 2022, with the changes taking effect in September 2023.
The 20mph speed limit is not a blanket ban, but is applied to “restricted roads”, which the BBC notes are “roads with lampposts placed not more than 200 yards (about 180m) apart.”
Of the 22,000 miles of roads in Wales, only an estimated 7,700 miles have changed from 30mph to 20mph.
Verdict
Rishi Sunak misled ITV Wales’ viewers.
We emailed Rishi Sunak’s office and Downing Street offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
Not Client Journalism
Credit is due to ITV Wales’ Adrian Masters, who asserted that “it’s not a blanket ban”, and reminded Sunak that “language is important.”
