Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“It’s no wonder that Labour seems so relaxed about taxing meat”

Claire Coutinho, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Conservative Party conference

Facts

During a speech at a Conservative Party conference in October 2023, Claire Coutinho claimed that “it’s no wonder that Labour seems so relaxed about taxing meat. Keir Starmer doesn’t eat it and Ed Miliband is clearly scarred by his skirmish with a bacon sandwich.

As Full Fact points out, there is “no evidence of the Labour party supporting taxes on meat.”

The Labour party subsequently confirmed to Full Fact that “taxing meat is not a Labour policy”

Verdict

Taxing meat is not a Labour policy. Claire Coutinho misled the public.

We emailed Claire Coutinho’s parliamentary office and the DESNZ offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.

Not Client Journalism

Sophy Ridge of Sky News repeatedly pointed out that taxing meat is not a Labour policy, during her interview with Claire Coutinho.

Additional Note

Though in itself a trivial example, Claire Coutinhor’s announcement that Labour wished to tax meat was an early example of a new form of political deceit especially characteristic of the Sunak administration: namely the invention of an imaginary threat in an attempt to galvanise political support and create the false impression that ministers are taking action on behalf of voters.
