Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

Liverpool “has been wounded by the media: The Sun in this city, a hurt for this city, and I certainly won’t be giving interviews to The Sun during the course of this campaign.”

Sir Keir Starmer, Labour Leadership Candidate, Liverpool Labour Leadership Hustings

Facts

At a hustings event in Liverpool during the Labour leadership contest in 2020, Keir Starmer played to the crowd, declaring to loud applause: “This city has been wounded by the media, the Sun in this city, a hurt for this city, and I certainly won’t be giving interviews to the Sun during the course of this campaign.”

In October 2021 Starmer wrote an article for The Sun, sparking backlash from Merseyside Labour MPs.

The following month he was challenged by a caller from Liverpool on LBC, responding: “It is very important as leader of the Labour Party that I speak to as many of the public as possible across the whole of the United Kingdom and that includes those who read The Sun, and the only way I can speak to them is to write in The Sun.” Starmer subsequently appeared regularly in the newspaper as part of his efforts to woo the Murdoch media.

Verdict

Starmer was as good as his word when he said he would give no interviews to The Sun “during the course of this campaign.” But he may well have given some  Labour members the impression he was appalled by the newspaper, when less than two years later he had no qualms about appearing in it.

We emailed Sir Keir Starmer’s office and Labour offering them the chance to respond. We received no response.
