Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Rishi Sunak

‎”No-one gives a toss about the social media cut and thrust”

Dominic Raab, BBC Breakfast

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab made these comments when defending the official Conservative Party press office Twitter account changing its name to “factcheckUK” for the ITV leadership debate.

Data from the electoral commission last year revealed that the Conservatives spent £2.1m on Facebook advertising alone during the 2017 election campaign. In comparison, Labour spent £577,000.

For this election, the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats all spent in excess of £100,000 on Facebook and Instagram campaigns by 19 November. Between 7-15 November, the Conservative Party spent £62,462 on Facebook adverts alone.

Dominic Raab’s statement is undermined by his own party’s high level of spending on social media adverts. The sums spent show that the Conservative Party cares very much about the social media cut and thrust.
