Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“Since Sadiq Khan has taken over these sort of attacks have doubled, literally doubled. I think there’s been over 1,000 or around about 1,000 this year…”

Susan Hall, Conservative Candidate for Mayor of London, GB News

Facts

Susan Hall claimed on GB News that anti-Semitic attacks in London “have doubled, literally doubled. I think there’s been over 1,000 or around about 1,000 this year…”

Sadiq Khan took office on 9 May 2016. According Community Security Trust’s (CST) Anti-Semitism Incidents Report published in 2017, they recorded “813 antisemitic incidents in Greater London in 2016”

Another CST Anti-Semitism Incidents Report published in 2023 determined “In 2022, 920 antisemitic incidents were reported to have taken place in Greater London”

At the time of Susan Hall’s statement the only data available for 2023 was a CST Report for January – June which said “447 antisemitic incidents were reported to have taken place in Greater London in the first six months of 2023, falling by 4% from 2022’s total of 468 across the same timeframe.”

Verdict

While Hall was within her rights to state that there were around 1,000 anti-Semitic incidents a year in London, her claim that “these sort of attacks have…literally doubled” is not supported by the available statistics.

This was the second time in two days that Susan Hall made an unfounded attack on Sadiq Khan in connection with anti-semitism.

We emailed Susan Hall’s office offering her the chance to respond. We received no response.

Client Journalism

The two GB News hosts asked for clarification but ultimately did not challenge Susan Hall’s false assertion that anti-semitic “attacks have doubled”. Below is the transcript of the interview

Susan Hall: “Since Sadiq Khan has taken over these sort of attacks have doubled, literally doubled. I think there’s been over 1,000 or around about 1,000 this year..”

Host: “Attacks on Jewish men and women?”

SH: “Yes, that’s right”

H: “Physical attacks or verbal?”

SH: “Recorded attacks, I don’t have the list. But that’s not good enough.”

We emailed the GB News Press Office offering them the chance to respond. We received no response.
