Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“Starmer will hand families a £2,200 tax bombshell with £28 billion green jobs investment promise”

Conservative Party, Leaflets Circulated in Late February 2024

Conservative campaign leaflets circulated in February 2024 included an image of a Daily Mail headline that read: “Starmer will hand families a £2,200 tax bombshell with £28 billion green jobs investment promise.”

However, as Full Fact notes, the original headline concluded with the phrase “Tories say”, making it clear it was a Conservative claim.

Here’s what the Daily Mail headline actually said.

The Daily Mail article also reported that Labour had denied the claim. This denial did not appear in the Conservative pamphlet.

Full Fact found that the leaflets were received by residents in at least five constituencies: Truro and Falmouth, Penistone and Stocksbridge, Chesham and Amersham, Ipswich, and Tamworth.

The Conservative Party edited the headline of a Daily Mail article in order to create a false impression and to mislead voters. This is a clear case of deliberate deception, i.e. lying to voters.

We reached out to the CCHQ press office offering them the chance to respond. We received no response.

Client Journalism

We asked the Daily Mail to comment on the Tory Party’s deceitful editing of their report. The Daily Mail failed to respond. When asked if it had complained to the Conservative Party, the Daily Mail did not answer.
