Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“The length of time that people are waiting for their procedures is actually going down”

Maria Caulfield, Health Minister, Sky News

Facts

In an interview for Sky News, Health Minister Mari Caulfield said that the waiting time for elective treatments in England was “actually going down”.

The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) told Full Fact that Ms Caulfield was talking about the reduction in the number of people experiencing waits of more than 18 months or two years.

As Full Fact pointed out, whilst the number of cases involving the very longest waits has come down significantly, this does not mean that people are facing shorter waits overall.

Data published by the NHS shows that the median waiting time has lengthened significantly since the start of the pandemic.

Verdict

Whilst the number of cases involving the very longest waits has come down significantly, this does not mean that people are facing shorter waits overall. Ms Caulfield was  misleading Sky viewers.

We emailed Maria Caulfield’s office and the DHSC offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
