Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“The selections for Labour candidates needs to be more democratic and we should end NEC impositions of candidates. Local Party members should select their candidates for every election.”

Sir Keir Starmer, Labour Leadership Candidate, X Post

Facts

In February 2020, during his bid to become leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer posted on X “Today I am announcing my plans to reform and unite our party into a more open, respectful, creative and engaging movement.”

Going on to say “The selections for Labour candidates needs to be more democratic and we should end NEC impositions of candidates. Local Party members should select their candidates for every election.”

Under his leadership the party has become notorious for its lack of democracy, head office repeatedly imposing candidates on local parties, a notorious case being that of Jamie Driscoll, then the sitting Mayor of the North of Tyne region, who didn’t make the shortlist for candidates at forthcoming mayoral elections.

Verdict

Starmer seriously misled party members.

We emailed Sir Keir Starmer’s office and Labour offering them the chance to respond. We received no response.
