Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“… there is a poll out today showing that [by] two-to-one the public think the police are getting this wrong and being too soft on these protesters”

Danny Kruger MP, BBC Radio 4

Facts

MP Danny Kruger told BBC Radio 4’s listeners that “there is a poll out today showing that [by] two to one the public think the police are getting this wrong and being too soft” on pro-Palestinian protestors.

Kruger later confirmed to Full Fact he was referencing a November 2023 YouGov survey focusing on respondent’s attitudes towards protests and marches in London.

41% said the rules were “too relaxed and should be tightened”, 19% that the rules were “too strict, and should be relaxed”, 21% that they were “about right”, and 19% were unsure.

While the poll shows that those who feel the rules are too relaxed outnumber those who feel they are too strict by two to one, this is not the same as saying that “two to one the public think the police are … being too soft on these protesters.”

Verdict

Danny Kruger misinformed BBC Radio 4 listeners. This is an early instance of Tory MPs making misleading statements about Palestinian protest marches.

We emailed Danny Kruger offering him the chance to respond. He replied but did not comment on our analysis.
