Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“Trans rights are human rights and I support the right to self-identification”

Sir Keir Starmer, Labour Leadership Candidate, Pink News

In an interview with Pink News in 2020, Sir Keir Starmer was asked “As Labour leader, what steps would you take to challenge the vilification of trans people in the media? And how would you educate people within the Labour Party and the wider population who still hold anti-trans views?”

He responded “The Labour Party stands up for people who are being abused and vilified, and we always will, we always should. Trans rights are human rights and I support the right to self identification.”

By July 2023 Starmer was telling the BBC; “We don’t think that self-ID is the right way forward.”

“Requiring a diagnosis upholds legitimacy of applications and confidence in the system” Annaliese Dodds, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, explained in the Guardian.

There was no reason for altering the policy other than a change in the political climate over the issue. The most generous interpretation of the original commitment – made to Pink News –  is that it was insincere.

We emailed Sir Keir Starmer’s office and Labour offering them the chance to respond. We received no response.
