Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Keir Starmer

“… we have resolved all the industrial action in the NHS, apart from the junior doctors, who are still not saying yes. But everyone else has said yes”

PM Rishi Sunak, Sky News

Facts

During a visit to Winchester, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told a former health worker that the government has “resolved all the industrial action in the NHS, apart from the junior doctors, who are still not saying yes. But everyone else has said yes.”

While junior doctors were the only part of NHS England who took industrial action in January, as Full Fact reports, this does not mean all NHS workers had agreed to the government’s pay offers.

Consultants in the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association rejected the government’s offer the previous week, with 58% voting “No” to the package.

The British Medical Association’s referendum on the government’s pay offer only closed on the 23rd January, with extended mandates ensuring consultants will be legally able to take industrial action if needed.

Verdict

Not all consultants had accepted the government’s offer, meaning that the threat of industrial action was far from resolved.

This is not the first time the PM has made misleading statements regarding the NHS. (See here, here and here.)

We emailed Rishi Sunak’s office and Downing Street offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
