Rishi Sunak claimed that smoking is “the single biggest entirely preventable cause of ill-health, disability, and death.”
According to a study published in BMC Public Health, adiposity (overweight or obesity) has contributed to more deaths than smoking in England and Scotland since 2011 for men and 2014 for women.
The study summarises that in 2017 deaths attributable to current/former smoking were 19.4% whilst those attributable to adiposity (overweight or obesity) were 23.1%.
Verdict
A minor error to be sure, but Rishi Sunak was misleading Conservative Conference.
