Lies, Falsehoods and Misrepresentations from Boris Johnson to Rishi Sunak

‎”We will be investing, as I say, the biggest ever cash boost to the NHS”

Boris Johnson, Conservative Party manifesto launch

Last year, the government pledged to give the NHS £33.9 billion in cash terms over the next five years. The Department of Health and Social Care then called it the “biggest ever funding increase for the NHS.” Boris Johnson repeated the boast in his manifesto launch.

According to Full Fact, in real terms (accounting for inflation) this is a boost of £20.5 billion. The fact-checking website said this sum is lower than the increase between 2004/5 and 2009/10. It added that if you measure the boost as the percentage increase to the NHS budget, it is below the historic average.

Paul Johnson, from the Institute of Fiscal Studies, told the BBC that Johnson’s claim was “misleading.”

Johnson has repeatedly boasted about the record-breaking sums being invested in the NHS. These reckless boasts should not be trusted.
