“when I learnt of something that I did not agree with, I suspended one of my MPs straightaway”

PM Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister’s Questions

Facts

Speaking in the House of Commons, Rishi Sunak claims he suspended Lee Anderson “straight away” for his allegedly Islamophobic comments about London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Anderson made his comments at 5.16 pm on Friday, Feb 23.

His suspension came the following afternoon, after Khan had branded Anderson’s comments “Islamophobic, anti-Muslim and racist”.

Verdict

Sunak’s comment was misleading. Afternoon the following day is a significant time in politics.

We emailed Rishi Sunak’s office and Downing Street offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
